CBS

The CBS facility at 2020 M St. NW, Washington DC is a new construction built to facilitate an equipment upgrade of the primary broadcast center next door. Power frequency EMI can induce noise in professional audio and video equipment, and it was necessary to control power frequency fields in the building to ensure proper broadcast quality. An EMI/RFI survey of the site at grade level was first conducted prior to construction to benchmark field levels.

A 60 Hz simulation of the main and emergency electrical systems was performed to determine mitigation needs. A model was created to show emergency power as the broadcast facility must operate fully in case of emergency. It was determined that shielding was needed for the facility to meet the IE

To verify shield performance, a 60 Hz survey of the completed building was performed. Field levels were confirmed to be within specified tolerances over more than 95% of the shielded area.
