Community College located in NYC had a fitness center (2,000 sq. ft
area) located directly over four transformers, secondary feeders, network
protectors and the main switchgear room. A wrestling room (2,000 sq.
ft area) immediately adjacent to the fitness room was also affected.
Peak magnetic field emissions of 111 mG (average 35 mG) were recorded
one-meter above the floor (peak of 720 mG on the floor) in the fitness
center. College wanted the emissions reduced to 3 mG (+/- 1 mG) one-meter
above the floor over 95% of the fitness center and wrestling room. To
achieve this level, VitaTech designed a three substrate, multilayer ELF
magnetic shield that was installed on all four walls and floor of the
fitness center plus half the floor and adjoining walls of the wrestling
room. The final shielded performance level was 2.6 mG (2 mG on the floor)
in both the fitness center and wrestling room.
